{"id":2208,"date":"2018-02-05T17:39:50","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T17:39:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.michaelfallon.org.uk\/?p=2208"},"modified":"2018-02-05T17:40:04","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T17:40:04","slug":"children-should-switch-off-sometimes-says-mp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.michaelfallon.org.uk\/?p=2208","title":{"rendered":"Children Should Switch Off Sometimes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael has supported the new Digital Sunset Challenge today, saying that children should \u201clearn to switch off sometimes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Digital Sunset Challenge was created by two local mums, Anna Firth and Linden Kemkaran, who want to encourage children to turn off their electronic devices at night and practice good digital habits.<\/p>\n<p>Recent research by the Children\u2019s Commissioner suggests that a growing number of under 13\u2019s are using social media with 3 in 4 children aged 10-12 having their own accounts.\u00a0 However, many parents struggle to divert their children&#8217;s attention away from the online world and back into the real world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelfallon.org.uk\/?attachment_id=2210\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2210\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2210\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michaelfallon.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/MF-shows-his-support-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"MF shows his support\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The county-wide Challenge was launched today with the Sevenoaks MP and the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Sajid Javid MP, at Sevenoaks Primary School.<\/p>\n<p>Michael joined local campaigners in calling on the Government to make the Digital Sunset Challenge a regular part of the transition PSHE for year 6 primary aged children by the end of the parliament.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cTechnology is a crucial part of daily life, but we should never be beholden to it.\u00a0 Children need support in understanding how to regulate their use of pocket devices \u2013 it\u2019s important that they learn to \u2018switch off\u2019 sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael has supported the new Digital Sunset Challenge today, saying that children should \u201clearn to switch off sometimes\u201d.
