{"id":2619,"date":"2019-10-23T08:51:38","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T08:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.michaelfallon.org.uk\/?p=2619"},"modified":"2019-10-29T14:19:51","modified_gmt":"2019-10-29T14:19:51","slug":"sir-michael-meets-walk-in-our-shoes-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.michaelfallon.org.uk\/?p=2619","title":{"rendered":"Sir Michael meets Walk In Our Shoes campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sir Michael Fallon met members of Sevenoaks District Senior Action Forum  on the morning of 18th October to discuss the concerns of older residents in the constituency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group were particularly concerned about how loneliness\nimpacts the elderly but praised the work of volunteers who runs pop-in cafes in\nthe constituency. These give residents an opportunity to socialise and also\ngive information about benefits, safety and using the internet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was some concern about the future of these services,\nbut with the announcement of \u00a32 million from the Government this week for\norganisations tackling loneliness it is hoped that more funding can be secured\nfor organisations like the caf\u00e9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group finished by presenting Sir Michael and Lady Fallon\nwith flowers as a thank you for their service to the constituency over the\nyears. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sir Michael also met with residents and staff at St John\u2019s\nCottage, an assisted living facility for adults with learning disabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sir Michael was given a tour of the premises before hearing the concerns of residents and the work the Sevenoaks Voices to be Heard Group, a charity that supports adults with learning disabilities, has been doing as part of the #WalkInOurShoes campaign. This campaign has been launched to encourage society and policymakers to consider the issues faced by people with learning difficulties when making decisions that will affect them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cIt was a pleasure to meet residents and staff from St John\u2019s Cottage last Friday.
